Adelaide Bauer-Leggat (nee Cooke), died from respiratory failure, May 24th, at the age of 82. She was a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Park, MI.
She retired after 40 years as a realtor at the age of 80. She spent 10 years in advertising early in her life, and then formed her own advertising agency in Detroit.
A charter member of the Nomads – a travel club that owned its own jet. She traveled the world with them. Her last trip was in 1998 when the club chartered an Air France Concorde to fly from Detroit to Paris, and then travel by train through the 'Chunnel' to England. Finally returning to the USA on the Queen Elizabeth II.
She was a patron of the arts and benefactor to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She was an avid gardener and tennis player. She was active in numerous charities, serving as Chair of the Detroit International Freedom Festival, and the Cinderella Ball in Detroit in the 1960's. Former board member on the Detroit Fine Arts, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Detroit Orchestra Hall. She was also a member of the Grosse Pointe Women's Club, Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra, and the Grosse Pointe Park Foundation. Addie was a Bon Secours/Beaumont Hospital volunteer in her later years. Her first love was founding the Woman's Division of Project Hope.
She was the daughter of the late Cecil and Louise Cooke of Grosse Pointe Woods. Former wife of the late Russell E. Bauer (1960-1979) and the late Norman Leggat (1983-2004). She is survived by her sister Victoria Kareus, of Grand Junction, CO; her son Jeffry Bauer, of Grosse Pointe, her step-daughter Jane Pizer of Madison, WI, her step-sons William Bauer of Delray Beach, FL, James Bauer of Venice, FL, John Bauer of Mattawan, MI, and Douglas Leggat of Grosse Pointe.
The Memorial Service for Addie will be Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 4:00 PM, at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lakeshore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236.
